Listen for how they think through the decision, do they weigh loyalty, fairness, or fear of getting someone in trouble? That reasoning process shows you how they currently sort out right from wrong in murky situations.

If they regret the choice they made, either way, that regret is worth exploring gently without judgment, it shows they're already holding themselves to a standard, which is a sign of a strong developing conscience.

If they say it's easy to decide, ask them to walk you through their rule for it, kids at this age often have surprisingly thoughtful personal rules about this exact dilemma.
