Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“What's a principle you picked up from sports, art, or being on a team that you didn't expect to matter this much?”
What to listen for
If they name something like showing up even when you don't feel like it, or trusting teammates, that's real wisdom earned through experience, they need that lesson honored as theirs, not just something a coach said.
If they connect it to a specific hard moment, like a loss or a bad performance, that context matters, let them tell the whole story, not just the takeaway.
If they say nothing really transferred, ask what they've learned about themselves through the activity instead, sometimes the lesson is more personal than principled.
What this tells you
A principle carried over from sports or art shows you what they trust as true no matter where they apply it.
