Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“How much freedom do you think feels right for someone your age?”
What to listen for
If they argue for a lot more freedom, they're telling you they feel ready to test their own judgment in the real world, that's worth exploring together rather than shutting down outright.
Listen closely for whether their reasoning is about specific things (walking somewhere alone, staying home later) or a general feeling of wanting to be trusted, the specifics are much easier to actually negotiate.
If they seem unsure or say the current amount feels fine, that's useful too, it tells you they feel appropriately supported right now, not chafing against limits.
What this tells you
This reveals how ready they feel to test their own independence, and where they specifically want more room.
