Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Was there a time you had to ask for help with something? How did that feel?”
What to listen for
If they describe it as no big deal, that's a great sign, they don't see asking for help as weak or embarrassing, which will serve them well for life.
If they admit it felt hard or embarrassing to ask, that's worth naming and normalizing directly, a lot of kids this age start to feel like needing help means they've failed at being independent.
If they can't think of a time they've asked for help, gently wonder together whether they might be avoiding asking even when they need it, that's worth keeping an eye on.
What this tells you
This shows you whether your child feels safe admitting they need help, or whether they feel pressure to handle everything alone.
