Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Have you ever kept a promise even though it turned out to be a lot harder than you expected?”
What to listen for
If they describe following through despite the difficulty, they're forming a real, tested sense of what it means to be someone others can count on, that's values in action, not just words.
If they admit they almost didn't keep it, that honesty matters more than a perfect answer, it shows they're wrestling with doing the right thing rather than pretending it's easy.
If they can't think of an example, ask about a smaller promise, like to a pet or a sibling, sometimes the big word "promise" makes them overlook simple ones.
What this tells you
This shows you how they handle the gap between what they said they'd do and what turned out to be hard, which reveals real character.
