What to listen for

If they give a thoughtful, specific answer, like wanting a closed door but not secrecy about big things, they're working out a mature, balanced sense of independence.

If they push for a lot more privacy than they currently have, that's a normal push for autonomy at this age, and it's worth hearing out fully before responding with rules.

If they don't seem to want much privacy at all, that's fine too, but keep an ear out over time for whether that changes as they get older.
