Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“When you get really heated about something, what actually helps you cool down?”
What to listen for
A clear answer here means they've already found something that works for them, music, walking away, time alone, and they need you to respect that method instead of pushing your own calming technique on them in the moment. Just note it and use it later.
If they say nothing really helps, or that they just stay mad for a while, that's honest and useful to know, it means patience from you matters more than any quick fix.
If they mention needing to be left alone, take that seriously, for a lot of teens, space is the actual tool, not a conversation.
What this tells you
Their answer is basically a map of how to support them next time they're upset, and how much they need you to let them handle it their own way first.
