Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“What kind of music or dancing gets you completely out of your head, even for a minute?”
What to listen for
If they answer easily and maybe even demonstrate a little, they feel free to be physical and unselfconscious around you, a sign of real comfort in their own skin, at least with you.
If they say "I don't really dance" but still name music that moves something in them, that's still valuable, the need is for release, not necessarily performance.
A quiet "nothing, really" might mean they haven't found their outlet yet, or that they're holding a lot right now, worth gently checking in on another day.
What this tells you
What lets them escape their own head for a moment shows you what genuine relief looks like for them physically, not just mentally.
