Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“Is there someone you lost touch with that you still think about sometimes?”
What to listen for
If they share a name and a memory, that person still matters to them, and naming it shows they're comfortable admitting they miss someone rather than pretending it doesn't bother them.
If there's a hint of regret about how the friendship ended or faded, let them sit with that without rushing to suggest reconnecting, sometimes just being heard about the loss is what's needed.
A "not really" is a fine answer, not every friendship fading leaves an emotional mark worth revisiting.
What this tells you
Who they still think about tells you which connections have left a lasting mark on how they understand belonging and loss.
