Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“Is there a small kindness from a stranger that you still think about?”
What to listen for
If a memory comes up easily, notice what made it stick, often it's the unexpectedness of it, being helped or noticed by someone with nothing to gain. That tells you they're paying attention to goodness in the world, even in small forms.
If they get a little emotional telling it, let that be okay; small kindnesses can carry surprising weight, and naming that out loud is a healthy release, not something to rush past.
If nothing comes to mind, you could share one of your own to model the kind of noticing you're asking about.
What this tells you
This reveals what kind of human connection actually moves them, and how attuned they are to warmth even from people who don't know them.
