What to listen for

If they share it, listen for whether the regret is about what they said, what they didn't say, or how it ended without resolution. That tells you what they're still carrying and whether it's more about guilt or about missing the friendship.

If they seem to want to talk it through, resist offering a fix right away; ask what they wish they'd said or done, and let them arrive at their own next step, even if it's just "I don't know, I wish I'd apologized."

If they'd rather not go there tonight, respect that fully, you can just say you're glad to listen whenever they want to.
