Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“How have things with your sibling(s) shifted as you've all gotten older?”
What to listen for
Listen for whether the shift is toward more closeness, more distance, or a different kind of relationship altogether, like moving from playmates to something more like friends or allies. All of these are normal; what matters is how they feel about the change.
If they express something wistful about how things used to be, that's worth sitting with rather than trying to fix, sibling relationships change shape many times over a lifetime.
If they say nothing's really changed, that's fine too, especially if the sibling is much younger or older.
What this tells you
This tells you how their sense of family belonging is evolving as everyone grows, which shapes who they'll lean on later in life.
