Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“Was there a time saying no to someone felt way harder than it should have?”
What to listen for
If they share a specific moment, listen for who it was and what made it so hard, fear of disappointing someone, fear of conflict, fear of losing the friendship. That tells you exactly where their boundaries feel most fragile right now.
If they seem proud they said no anyway, celebrate that specifically rather than generally, naming exactly what they did well reinforces that they can trust their own limits.
If they say they ended up saying yes when they didn't want to, resist the urge to tell them what they should have done; instead ask how it felt afterward, which often teaches the lesson better than advice would.
What this tells you
This reveals how much they trust that their own limits are valid and worth defending, even when it risks upsetting someone else.
