Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“How do you decide when something's actually worth standing up for versus just letting it go?”
What to listen for
If they've got a clear, thought-out answer, it means they're developing their own compass for picking battles instead of just reacting emotionally in the moment, a sign of real maturity forming.
If they describe a recent example, listen for whether they felt good about the choice afterward or still unsure; that uncertainty is normal and doesn't need fixing, just acknowledging.
If they say "I don't really think about it, I just react," that's honest too, you can reflect back that noticing that pattern is itself a useful first step.
What this tells you
This shows you how they're learning to trust their own judgment about what truly matters to them.
