What to listen for

If they give a balanced, reasoned answer, they're showing real growth in judging their own readiness for independence, which is worth acknowledging out loud.

If they push hard for more freedom, they're testing how much room they have to prove themselves, that push is normal and healthy, not defiance for its own sake.

If they say the rules are fine, take it at face value, but also notice if that matches how they act, sometimes compliance in words hides quiet frustration.
