Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“If time wasn't an issue at all, what's a skill you'd want to get really good at?”
What to listen for
If they answer fast and enthusiastically, that's a real window into what genuinely excites them apart from any pressure to be productive or practical about it.
If they pick something surprising or seemingly random, resist any urge to rate how "useful" it is, the point is what draws them, not what you'd approve of.
If they say "I don't know," you can float a guess based on what you've noticed them enjoy lately; sometimes that opens the door more than the open question did.
What this tells you
This shows you what kind of mastery would make them feel most like themselves, regardless of any practical payoff.
