Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“When you're upset, what actually helps you feel calm again?”
What to listen for
If they can name a real strategy, music, being alone, talking it out, they're building genuine self-awareness about managing their own feelings, which will serve them for life.
If they say nothing helps or they don't know, they may need you to help them notice patterns together, since younger kids this age are still learning to read their own signals.
If they mention something like a person rather than an activity, that's worth noting, it tells you who they lean on most when things get hard.
What this tells you
This shows you how equipped they feel to manage their own hard feelings and who or what they count on to get there.
