Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“Is there something you avoided trying that, looking back, you'd probably go for now?”
What to listen for
If they name something specific, it means they've got real perspective on their own growth and aren't afraid to admit past hesitation, that kind of honesty about fear is a strength, not a confession.
If they talk about why they avoided it back then, fear of embarrassment, fear of failing, just let that sit without minimizing it; it was real to them at the time.
If they say they'd still avoid it, that's honest too, and worth respecting rather than trying to talk them out of it in this conversation.
What this tells you
This tells you how their relationship with risk and fear has shifted, and what they might be ready to try next.
