What to listen for

If they come with actual ideas, more notice, a chance to make their case, something specific, it means they want to be part of the process, not just a rule that happens to them, which is a healthy, mature ask.

If they get frustrated recalling a past curfew fight, let that land without immediately defending the old decision; you can revisit the reasoning separately once the emotion has settled.

If they say they don't care, that might mean they've given up expecting input, worth gently checking whether that's really true.
