Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“Have you ever felt grumpy and couldn't even figure out why? What do you think was going on?”
What to listen for
If they can name something small underneath, like being tired or hungry, they're building real insight into how their body and feelings connect, a skill that will help them for life.
If they genuinely can't find a reason and that's okay with them, that's normal too, you can gently offer that sometimes feelings just show up uninvited, and that doesn't mean anything is wrong with them.
If they say "I don't know" and seem bothered by not knowing, reassure them that even grown-ups get grumpy for no clear reason sometimes, it takes the pressure off needing a tidy answer.
What this tells you
This shows how much they're starting to connect their feelings to their body's signals like hunger or tiredness.
