Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“Was there a time sharing was way harder than you expected it to be?”
What to listen for
An honest answer about a real struggle shows they trust you with the messy parts, not just the polished version. Thank them for telling you rather than jumping to a lesson.
If they describe how they got through it anyway, that's worth celebrating out loud, it shows real growth in self-control.
If nothing comes to mind, that's fine; you can mention something you noticed and ask how it felt for them.
What this tells you
This shows you how they experience the tug between wanting something for themselves and doing right by someone else.
