Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“Was there a moment today when you really wanted me to look over and see you? What were you doing?”
What to listen for
If they light up describing something specific, a jump, a drawing, a joke, they're telling you exactly how they like to be noticed. That's valuable information: it tells you what kind of attention actually lands for them, not just that they want attention in general.
If they say something like "you were on your phone" or mention a moment you missed, stay easy about it, this is a gift, not an accusation. A simple "thank you for telling me, I'm glad you said it" does more good than an apology spiral.
If they shrug or say "nothing," it might mean today felt unremarkable to them, or it might mean they've stopped expecting to be watched. Either way, you can say "well I noticed you today when..." and give them a moment back.
What this tells you
This answer shows you exactly when your child feels like they truly matter to you, and when they feel invisible even in a full room.
