What to listen for

A wild, over-the-top rule (like "everyone has to quack before their turn") shows a kid who feels free to be silly and knows this is a safe space to be a little ridiculous with you. That playful freedom is worth mirroring back, laugh with them, don't just nod.

If they change a rule to make the game fairer instead of funnier, they may be someone who's been thinking about rules and fairness a lot lately, maybe from a recent game that felt unjust. Gently ask what happened.

If they say "I don't know," try naming a game they already love and asking what part of it bugs them, sometimes the blank stare is just a stalled imagination, not a lack of things to say.
