Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Can you feel lonely even when you're surrounded by people? Has that ever happened to you?”
What to listen for
If they describe a specific moment, sitting at a full lunch table but feeling invisible, or being in a group chat but not really 'in' it, they're telling you they need to feel truly seen, not just included on paper. Notice whether they frame it as something wrong with them ('I'm just awkward') versus something about the situation; the first version means they need reassurance that their voice matters and belongs.
If they brush it off with 'no, never,' don't push. Some kids at this age are just starting to notice this feeling and don't have words for it yet, or they're not ready to hand it to you tonight. A light 'well, if that ever happens, I want to know' leaves the door open.
If they turn it around and ask if you've felt that way, answer honestly and briefly, this is one of those moments where your own vulnerability buys you a lot of trust.
What this tells you
How they answer this shows you whether they currently feel truly known by the people around them or just physically present among them.
