“Has a coach or teacher ever pushed you to get better at something in a way that actually worked? What did they do?”

What to listen for

If they light up describing specific feedback or a challenge someone gave them, they're telling you they crave being taken seriously and stretched, not just praised. Pay attention to whether they mention feeling capable afterward, that's a sign they need more chances to prove themselves at things that are actually hard.

If the story has an edge of resentment ('she just kept telling me I could do more, it was annoying') that resolved into pride, that's worth naming out loud: 'so it was annoying until it worked.' That helps them see growth isn't always comfortable.

If they say no one's really pushed them, ask gently if they wish someone would, some kids are hungry for a challenge and don't know how to ask for one.
