What to listen for

If they describe a warm, inside feeling ("it makes my heart happy" or "I like seeing them smile"), they're already discovering that kindness has its own built-in reward, a beautiful, healthy realization worth affirming clearly.

If they struggle to answer or say it doesn't feel good, that's honest and worth exploring gently rather than correcting, ask about a specific time they helped someone and see how it felt in the moment.

If they mention wanting recognition or a reward, that's completely normal at this age too, you can gently note the difference between helping for a reward and helping just because, without shaming either instinct.
