What to listen for

If they can explain a reason, even a simple one like "so nobody gets hurt," they're developing real understanding that rules aren't just about control, they're about care, that's a big step in thinking.

If they say rules are just unfair and don't see the point, that's a chance to talk through one specific rule together rather than rules in general, which feels less like an attack to them.

If they say "I don't know," ask about a rule at school or in a game instead of at home, it can feel safer to reason about.
