Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“How do you honestly feel about being told what to wear?”
What to listen for
Strong opinions here are healthy, they're testing how much control they get over how they present themselves to the world, which matters more at this age than it might seem.
If they push back on a specific rule, listen for whether it's about comfort, self-expression, or just wanting a say, each points to a different kind of need worth respecting.
If they say they don't mind either way, that might be genuine, or it might mean they've learned not to expect much say in it, worth a gentle follow-up about what they'd choose if it were fully up to them.
What this tells you
This shows how much control over their own image and choices currently feels available to them.
