What to listen for

If they have a clear opinion and can explain their reasoning, they're testing out having a voice in decisions that affect them, take the reasoning seriously even if you don't change the rule.

If they say it's totally unfair without specifics, they might need help turning a feeling into an actual request you could consider together.

If they say "I don't know," ask what they'd change about tonight's bedtime specifically, rather than the rule in general.
