Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“As you get older, is there a family rule you think should change, and one you hope stays exactly the same?”
What to listen for
If they can name both clearly, they're actively negotiating their own growing independence, and they need to feel like that negotiation is a real conversation, not something decided entirely without them.
If they only want to talk about what should change, that's normal at this age, ask what rule actually makes them feel safer or more cared for, to balance the picture.
If they say "I don't know," ask about one specific rule, like curfew or screen time, rather than rules in general.
What this tells you
Their answer shows you how ready they feel to take on more responsibility, and where they still want the structure to hold.
