“Has there been a time you helped someone even though it really wasn't your job to?”

What to listen for

If they can describe it easily and with some pride, that's a sign generosity is becoming a real, internalized part of who they are, not just something they're told to do. Notice if they mention it cost them something, time, energy, being late, giving something up, because that's the real test of whether it was a genuine choice.

If they say they've thought about helping but held back, ask what stopped them, sometimes it's shyness, sometimes it's not being sure it was welcome, and both are worth understanding without judgment.

If nothing comes to mind, ask about a time someone helped them that way instead, and work from there.
