Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“What's a way you show someone you care about them without actually saying it in words?”
What to listen for
The action they name, helping without being asked, remembering a small detail, sitting close, shows you their natural love language, the way they instinctively express care when it matters.
If they seem a little shy answering this, that's normal; showing care wordlessly is often more vulnerable to talk about than saying "I love you," since it feels more personal and specific.
If they say they usually just say it out loud instead, that's a great answer too, it tells you they're comfortable being direct with their feelings.
What this tells you
This reveals their natural, instinctive way of expressing care, which is worth recognizing and mirroring back to them.
