The prompt

“Honestly, does winning matter more to you than playing fair, or the other way around?”

What to listen for

A thoughtful, honest answer, even if it's 'winning matters a lot to me', is worth respecting rather than correcting; the goal is understanding their real values, not hearing the 'right' answer.

If they say fairness matters more but then describe getting really upset when they lose, that gap is normal and worth naming gently, values and impulses in the moment don't always line up yet.

If they insist winning doesn't matter to them at all, gently ask how it felt the last time they lost something important to them, it can reveal a more complicated, honest answer.
