What to listen for

A word said with pride shows they've found something about themselves that feels solid and worth holding onto, even as everything else about them is changing fast right now.

If they pick a word that sounds more like a label from someone else ('the smart one,' 'the difficult one') and say it flatly, it might mean they're measuring themselves by other people's opinions more than their own sense of self. Ask gently if that word feels like the whole story or just part of it.

If they can't think of one, that's not a red flag, it just means their sense of identity is still forming. Offer a word you see in them and watch how they react to it.
