What to listen for

If they name something specific with a clear reason, that's a sign they're ready to advocate for themselves respectfully, treat that case-making as a skill worth encouraging, even if you don't grant it immediately.

If they seem hesitant to bring anything up, reassure them that naming it isn't the same as automatically getting it, they need to know it's safe to ask without it turning into a fight.

If they can't think of anything, that's a sign the current rules feel roughly right to them, which is worth knowing too.
