Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“How has what privacy means to you changed from a few years ago to now?”
What to listen for
If they describe wanting more control over their own space, thoughts, or online life, that's completely developmentally normal, it means they're building a private inner world, which is a healthy part of becoming their own person, not a red flag.
If they mention a specific moment their privacy felt violated, however small, take that seriously and without defensiveness; it's valuable feedback about where trust needs rebuilding.
If they say it hasn't really changed, that's fine too, not every teen experiences this the same way or at the same pace.
What this tells you
This tells you how their need for a separate, respected inner life has grown, and how much they need to feel that their personal space is genuinely theirs.
