What to listen for

Listen for the logic they use, is it about how much it matters long-term, how much energy it would take, or how the other person might react? Their reasoning shows you how they're learning to pick their battles, a skill that takes most adults years to refine.

If they describe a recent example, notice whether they feel good or unsettled about the choice they made; that tells you whether they need reassurance that they judged it right, or space to reconsider.

If they say they usually just let things go, gently note that as information rather than a problem, it might mean speaking up still feels risky to them in some contexts.
