Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“Is there a habit you're trying to build this month, like something you do every day to get better at it?”
What to listen for
If they can name something specific and track their own progress, they're building real self-discipline and a sense that they can shape who they become through steady effort.
If they haven't thought about it that way before, that's a great chance to help them pick something small and doable together, which teaches them that growth happens in tiny daily steps, not all at once.
If they say "I don't know," suggest something you've noticed them wanting to improve at, and ask if that feels right.
What this tells you
This shows whether they currently see themselves as capable of shaping their own growth on purpose.
