What to listen for

If they describe warmth, safety, or a big smile inside, that's them noticing what unconditional love feels like, which helps them recognize it in people too.

If they mention missing a pet or wishing for one, that longing is worth taking seriously as a real feeling, not just a request for an animal.

If they don't have a pet and seem unsure, ask about an animal at a friend's house or the zoo that they felt a connection with.
