Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“What does it feel like when a pet, or an animal you love, looks at you like they really love you back?”
What to listen for
If they describe warmth, safety, or a big smile inside, that's them noticing what unconditional love feels like, which helps them recognize it in people too.
If they mention missing a pet or wishing for one, that longing is worth taking seriously as a real feeling, not just a request for an animal.
If they don't have a pet and seem unsure, ask about an animal at a friend's house or the zoo that they felt a connection with.
What this tells you
How they describe a pet's love shows their growing sense of what it feels like to be loved without having to earn it.
